Catalyzing worker co-ops & the solidarity economy

The Occupation of Economics has begun worldwide!

December 12, 2011
Body paragraph
The Occupation of Economics has begun worldwide
Some economists really get it and they are putting their names and reputations on the line

This is not only good news, but a very significant development for the Occupy movement. There are economists who see the possibilities for a new kind of economics, and they are organizing in the wake of the Occupy movement:

Economics for our times and for our shared future requires profound departures from the orthodox economics of the past. We need an economics for the 21st century. Econ4.org is your guide to new ways of thinking about economics.

Economists from the University of Massachusetts Amherst vouched their support for the Occupy movement and the 99% in an open statement to Occupiers. Economists from around the world have added their names to this statement.
The economists who created the statement and the organization Econ4 believe there needs to be fundamental change in the field of economics in order to influence change in the economy and political spheres.

To find out more about the statement to Occupiers and the possibilities these economists see for the future visit Econ4.org. [1]

One of the signers, Nancy Folbre, spoke directly about this development in her NYTimes blog, giving background and links to some recent events that have led to the start of Econ4. [2] One story she relates is about students at Harvard walking out of a standard introductory class in economics.
