Announcment from the NYC Network of Worker Co-ops

Staff from the City Council's policy division recently called the NYC NoWC phone number to talk about worker co-ops. The Council Speaker is giving a speech on jobs on October 18 and is interested in worker co-ops. A few of us met with two Council staff members a few weeks ago to talk about worker co-ops and what our organizations do to support co-ops. They let us know that the Speaker is interested in supporting a worker co-op incubator to assist in the formation of worker co-ops. They have not committed to funding a worker co-op incubator but did ask for projected costs. We had a follow up meeting this week and it looks like the Speaker will talk about supporting a worker co-op incubator in her speech. They think Center for Family Life is in a good position to carry out the incubator because of its successes with Si Se Puede, Beyond Care, and now Golden Steps. Wanted to share this information so that others know what is happening, and so that you are aware that worker co-ops may be mentioned in the upcoming jobs speech on the 18th (which will be held at a private breakfast event). If you would like to know more about the meetings with the Council staff, or have ideas for a potential co-op incubator, please reach out to me by email or call me at 646-459-3004.
