The Right to Food: Corporate, Foreign Gov?t Land Grab Causing Hunger in Poor Countries (10.28.10) The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier De Schutter, joins Democracy Now to discuss his recent warning that some 500 million small farmers in poor countries are suffering from hunger, partly because foreign countries and corporations have bought up large tracts of land.

philip mcmichaels
Philip McMichaels is a sociologist at Cornell U, and I had read his piece in the 2006 Socialist Register in my recent grad studies. He has a powerful post-Marxist perspective and distinguishes between food regimes as historical conditions of food systems. From colonial systems to food development to globalization, he identifies a series of phases of these kinds.
I have found a 2009 article "A food regime genealogy" in the Journal of Peasant Studies that I think represents the same powerful material on-line. He also finishes with some solid reflections on modern social movements that gives strong context for the solidarity economics and co-op movements.
Mark Rego-Monteiro was a member of the NY Park Slope Food Co-op for more than 10 years, has an MS in Sustainable Development, and is currently volunteering on a farm with a Brazilian NGO, Centro Ecologico.
