Organizing Communities Across Boundaries: An Organizing Teach-in

Wonderland Camp and Conference Center, Camp Lake, Wisconsin

This weekend-long organizing teach-in is designed to provide a follow-up to the United States and Midwest Social Forums for Midwest-based grassroots organizations, activists, and students, and to contribute to the continued development of the social justice movement in the Midwest. The teach-in focuses on the development of collaborative relationships and organizing skills, strategies, and tactics. More specifically, the event is tailored to strengthening regional social and issue area networks and their interconnections, and to providing valuable training in certain key aspects of organizing, focusing in particular on the challenges of building broad-based coalitions across race, gender, class, age, issue area, and other sources of division within the social justice movement. The teach-in will offer a number of high quality workshops and interactive activities designed to enable participants to identify both the interconnections between different communities and struggles as well as the causes of ongoing division among them, and to develop the organizing strategies, tactics, and skills needed to establish stronger social, strategic, and organizational links and thereby break out of the "silos" that have served to segment the social justice movement.

Building a New World: Moving Past Empire Towards New Local and Global Paradigms

First World Prout Assembly
Radford, Virgina

The World Prout Assembly was established in January 2005 to study ways to create a holistic, socio-economic, political, cultural and spiritual transformation throughout the world. The vision is for activists in all countries fighting for justice in all spheres of life to come together to form one universal coalition so as to create global change. By providing solidarity to all local and global anti-exploitation struggles, the World Prout Assembly envisions the mobilization of humanity to end the economic hegemony of Empire and to usher the revitalization of local communities and local, self-sustaining economies. Specific topics of concern at the First Summit of the World Prout Assembly include (1) economic democracy and cooperatives, including worker, producer and consumer cooperatives; (2) energy and water self-sufficiency, including solar, wind and water cooperatives; and (3) bioregional, independent, self-sustaining, locally self-sufficient, ecological-agricultural communities that can provide the minimum necessities of life to all inhabitants; (4) countering racisms and fundamentalisms; (5) health and health care; (6) immigration; and (7) future visions.

"Just Giving: Global Social Change Philanthropy" - Grantmakers Without Borders' 8th Annual Conference

San Francisco

Since 2001, Grantmakers Without Borders (Gw/oB) has convened an annual gathering focused on global social change philanthropy. These events have brought together a diverse assembly of 150 to 250 grantmakers, individual donors and global Southern activists, who learn, network, and explore collaboration through sessions that cover a wide range of grantmaking topics. For many international grantmakers, Gw/oB¹s annual conference has become a cherished and indispensable event in their yearly calendars. The majority of conference workshops are identified through a competitive process. In developing the conference program, Gw/oB strives for a balance of two kinds of sessions focused on: * GRANTMAKING PRACTICE: Past workshops have focused on topics such as site visits, proposal review, accountability, power relations, and gender issues, among many other topics. * SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES: Past workshops have explored topics such as resource rights, HIV/AIDS, women¹s rights, trade issues, workers rights, and FGM, among many other topics.
