A New Direction for the Catholic Church!? #2

November 26, 2013
Body paragraph

Pope Francis just released his first encyclical, "The Joy of the Gospel." And indeed, Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga of Tegucigalpa, the new Pope's primary spokesperson, seems to have been a genuine herald.

The NY Times carries an article this morning reporting on the new encyclical. The Vatican Radio web site posted a summary and synopsis.

The NYTimes article focuses almost solely on the political economic parts of the encyclical, giving little attention to the Pope's re-affirmation of a male only priesthood and the Church's firm opposition to abortion. Here are some of the quotes it uses:

"Just as the commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say 'thou shalt not' to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills."

"How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?"

"I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security."
